Dr. Douglas DeSalvo, D.C.

DeSalvo Chiropractic

As a treatment for acute neck and low back pain, chiropractic care is an undisputed winner. And although it is primarily used to relieve musculoskeletal pain, chiropractic has also been successfully used to treat a number of conditions.

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a therapeutic modality that emphasizes diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mechanical disorders of the spine. Misalignment of the spinal column can have pervasive adverse effects on tissues and organs throughout the body. The restoration of proper alignment through spinal adjustments and other treatments has positive effects on virtually all aspects of health.

How Does Chiropractic Therapy Work?

Chiropractic is based on the correction of subluxation of the spinal column. When the spine is even slightly out of alignment, it may impinge on the spinal nerves that branch out to the muscles and various organs. Bringing things back into their proper places through gentle manipulative techniques results in sometimes-miraculous outcomes.

A Typical Treatment
A typical chiropractic treatment might include heat and/or cold applied to the affected area and massage to relax the muscles. However, the centerpiece of chiropractic is the adjustment and manipulation, in which the chiropractor restores vertebral alignment, taking the stress off impinged nerves and overworked muscles. This can be done manually or gently with the Impulse Instrument Adjuster where there is no "twisting" or "popping" based on effectiveness and patient preference.

In addition to spinal manipulations, Dr. DeSalvo may utilize other modalities such as infrared therapy and spinal decompression. Infrared and photodynamic therapy involves the application of specific wavelengths of light to problem areas to help control pain, reduce inflammation, and enhance healing.

Spinal decompression is particularly effective in treating pain associated with herniated/bulging discs and degenerative disc disease in the low back and neck. The patient lies on a specialized decompression table while traction-distraction forces are applied to spinal structures in a precise and graduated manner, offset by cycles of partial relaxation. This “decompression effect” gently separates the vertebrae and lowers pressure inside targeted discs, causing retraction of the herniated or bulging disc, reduction of pressure on the nerve root, faster healing, and excellent clinical response.

Cost-Effective
Chiropractic is also cost-effective. A study in the Journal of Occupational Medicine compared medical and chiropractic treatment for low back pain and found that with
chiropractic, compensation costs were much less, treatment costs significantly lower, and days of compensation dramatically reduced. Overall, patients saw chiropractors three times more often than physicians but at less cost.
